Beaches in Todos Santos
Todos Santos has miles of pristine deserted beaches, with no hotels or developments. The beaches in Todos Santos are difficult to access without a vehicle. It is too far to walk, and the roads are too rough for a bicycle. The beaches here are known for surfing. At Punta Lobos, you can watch the fishermen come in in the afternoon and perhaps buy some fresh fish off of them. San Pedrito, Los Cerritos or Pescadero are the most popular beaches.
Casa de la Cultura - Cultural Center
The correct name is Centro Cultural Profesor Nestor Agundez Martinez. is located two blocks up Benito Juarez from the Hotel California. The Todos Santos Cultual Center was named in honor of a local high shcool teacher. It houses a modest display of artifacts depicting history of the regions, cultural events as well as photos of early missions. There are five exhibit rooms consisting of old ceramic pots and painting by local artists. Open Mon - Fri. 8am till 5pm Sat. - Sun. 9am till 1pm.
This is a famous hotel that is not really even famous. Sometime in the mid to late 1980's, the word got out that Todos Santos was home to "the" Hotel California made famous by the Eagles' song in the 1970's. A man in town claims to have started the rumor, to generate tourist and new business. Rumor had it that Don Henley wrote the song while staying at the hotel. Henley denies ever staying at the hotel. Besides the urban legend, Hotel California is a nice hotel with a good restaurant and bar.
El Molino Sugar Mill
By 1731 Todos Santos was producing 200 burro loads of panocha (raw brown sugar) annually. During the 19th century Todos Santos Mexico thrived as the Baja sugarcane capital with eight sugar mills. After World War II, sugar prices dropped and all but one mill closed. El Molino Mill finally closed in 1965 when the freshwater spring dried up. Today, evidence of a prosperous sugar town can be seen by the ruins of sugar mills and the tall chimneys seen throughout the town.
Gral. Manuel Marquez de Leon Theater
Early 1940s when the Governor of Baja California Sur visited Todos Santos, he was enamored with the local musicians, dancers and particularly the children performers. He vowed to build Todos Santos a theater. As a result, in 1944 the charming Teatro Marquez de Leon was inaugurated in the town square. Until the 1990's, Teatro de Marquez de Leon was the only theater in all of Baja California Sur. The theater is used for concerts and events, like the Todos Santos Art Festival.
Nuestra SeÃ±ora del Pilar de Todos Santos
Our Lady of Pilar Church was founded by father Jaime Bravo in 1723. It was originally called Mision Santa Rosa de las Palmas, but that mission was destroyed by a native rebellion. The new mission served as a Spanish headquaters until 1749. Iglesia Nuestra Senora del Pilar is located across the street from the small town plaza and the Cultural Center. This mission contains the statue of the Virgin of Pilar, which is the focus of Todos Santos main festival in October.
Todos Santos Art Studios and Galleries
Todos Santos is a very laid back town with a small, but growing ex-patriot comunnity. There is also a very large number of foreigners — mostly Americans — living here. Todos Santos is home to several talented painters, sculptors, artisans and intellectuals and because of this influence, you will find many fine art galleries here and crafts for sale. At last count there are 14 galleries in Todos Santos, remarkable considering the town population is less than 5,000.
Virgin of Pilar
Inside the Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Todos Santos next to the man plaza is a orange a blue figure of the Virgin of Pilar. This is a important staue that is the focus of the towns largest festival that takes place each year. In August the famous Virgin of Loreto statue is brought to the church in Loreto. The Virgin of Pilar is considered the mother of all Baja churches founded by the Jesuits.
Whale Watching in Todos Santos
Every winter, the grey whale heads 6,000 miles south to the warmer lagoons of Baja in January, February and March. Their main reason for heading south is to mate and give birth in the protected shallow lagoons in Baja. Todos Santos is a good place to view these magnificent creatures. Gray whales are known to make a lively show, being naturally curious and social. The whales like to show off their young and sometimes even getting close enough to be touched.
